First Time for Botox®? Here's How to Prepare for the Best Experience
Getting Botox® for the first time can feel overwhelming and maybe even a little frightening. We want you to know exactly what to expect and how to prepare for this popular cosmetic procedure.

Botox® is the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure in the United States, and for good reason. It’s a tried-and-true method for minimizing wrinkles and helping to reverse signs of aging.

Our team at New Vitality Centers have many years of experience with administering Botox, and we want to help you feel comfortable and prepared if you’re gearing up for your first time getting Botox.

What exactly is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic injection that’s made up of the toxin produced from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It blocks the signals from your nerves from your muscles in order to keep them from contracting. In other words, your muscles are temporarily paralyzed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. This helps to reverse signs of aging.

Most commonly, Botox is used for treating frown lines in between your eyebrows and crow’s feet around your eyes.

What you can expect from a Botox treatment

Botox is an FDA-approved procedure that’s safe and minimally invasive. Your provider will use needles in order to inject the Botox into the targeted muscle area. You should experience little to no discomfort, but a topical anesthetic can be applied if you’re worried about the procedure being painful in any way.

Overall, your Botox treatment should take about 10-15 minutes, and you’ll be able to return to your regular routine immediately since there’s no downtime required. The effects of your Botox may take about 7-14 days to fully develop, but they should last about 3-4 months.

How to prepare for Botox

Before your actual Botox injection appointment, you’ll have a consultation to review your medical history, allergies, or medical conditions. You’ll also be able to discuss your goals that you have for the procedure in order for you and your provider to guarantee that the injections will work the best to give you the results that you want.

On the day you receive your Botox, you’ll need to remove any makeup and cleanse your face thoroughly. It’s also good to avoid taking any blood thinners, to lessen the risk for bruising.

After the procedure, try not to rub or put any pressure on the treatment area in order to keep the Botox from spreading to other areas. If you receive any injections between your brows, don’t lie down or bend over for about 3-4 hours to avoid eyelid droops.
